What I'm about to tell you may cause you to judge me....but I must be honest: I don't own a set of matching coffee mugs. And they are my favorite part of my kitchen.
Now all of you with matching table accessories....I know what you are thinking. "I bet that must be one messy cabinet" and "What do you use when company is over?" Well.....my cabinet isn't messy, it's "relaxed and casual". Ok maybe it's a little out of control, but my guests think they are really neat.
I love the idea of the stories behind the mugs. I love being in a friend's home, and being invited into their cabinet to choose a mug I want to use. How fun! Should I choose the dainty and delicate victorian porcelain teacup? If I do, I will need a double refill. If I choose the large purple striped glazed blue one, I will be good to go on my coffee.
I have about 15 mismatched mugs and they are awkward and even possibly considered ugly. And while I will never chuck the jumbo sized Charlie Brown Cafe mug that I bought in a tiny coffee shop in Hong Kong or the Starbucks Picasso style mug I got in a gift 7 Christmas holidays ago from a co-worker, I do have a few pretty mugs in my cabinet in between the rest.
It’s such a trivial little aspect of the kitchen but has a big impact on the daily ritual of a nice, steaming hot cup of coffee or tea. Which in my opinion is really ESSENTIAL.
So I'm imagining all the fun stories these mugs can tell if they could.....as I sit here and sip out of one ugly mug. ;-)
