Dear Self at the End of 2016,
Remember the feeling of seeing Thanksgiving in the rearview mirror?
- You prepared the side dish with the stacked beets and sweet potatoes after seeing the recipe in a magazine.
- You danced on the dining room bench with your niece and nephew.
- You had dinner with a great guy your sister’s business partner knows before he flew home for the holiday.
Once it was over it felt like everything was ready to go back to normal. You made a to-do list for the week and filled it with reminders for grocery shopping, organizing the bathroom cabinet, and picking up your favorite dress at the dry cleaners.
But then there was the one night in early December when you sat and wondered if the point at this time of the year was NOT to get back to normal. What if the baked root vegetables and the dance party and the date with a great guy were not just part of the holidays, but part of your everyday life? There is something special about this time of year that changes the way people approach their daily lives. People make an extra effort for friends and loved ones, feel more sentimental and nostalgic, and in those moments, find the perfect moment for trying something new or taking a risk. This sounds like a recipe for even more days that could be merry and bright.
So let's make a new to-do list. Here's how to make your life more like the holidays in just five steps.
1. Let Holiday Foods Inspire You
You know how you have simple taste in food, but you also appreciate a little flair? You eat food that is real food, you are occasionally gluten-free, and you love making salad dressing. Real food is a growing trend and there are always more recipes, cooking products, and since your kitchen renovation is starting soon, more upcoming opportunities to share food with friends and family at home. In 2017, go for it. Find at least one brand new attention-grabbing recipe a month that includes real, seasonal food and make it. Invite people over and mix it in with your usual dishes. Use the good china. Buy that new pan you had your eye on for cooking something fabulous and celebrate food, not just at Thanksgiving and Christmas, but as often as possible. At the very least, this means 12 fabulous new recipes to try in 2017.
2. Spend more time with family and friends
Even if it takes a little extra work, or if you’re tired, or if they tease you for driving the speed limit and watching the Hallmark Channel. Time spent with your family and friends is priceless.
You know how you sing in the car and love to dance? The right song at the right moment makes you belt out the lyrics as though you wrote them yourself and you love any opportunity to dance. Keep it up sister, because your friends and family appreciate this about you! Most of the time they even join you for mini-singing and dancing parties. As a follow-up to #1 above, move some furniture around to create a dance floor in your place to create even more special moments. Dance like no one is looking, even if they are. A living room can be a dance floor, right?
3). Drink wine
One glass a day. You know, for your heart. Drink it from a pretty glass, too.
4). Eat dark chocolate
Naturally, this is to reap the benefits of all of those antioxidants.
5). Magical Romance
You know how you…...well.....ok ugh. Who are you kidding? A magical romance is something you would love to focus on, but you still haven’t figured out the secret.
Here’s your plan for a new approach to romance in 2017: Don’t have an approach to romance. Just see #1 and #2 above and savor those moments. Your enthusiasm for life and sharing special times with others genuinely fills you with joy. Maybe the way you experience the joy of simple and everyday magic in your life will catch the eye of the right guy this year. Well, it’s either that or you continue to be grateful for the people in your life and the experiences you share. That’s pretty magical itself.
With these 5 steps, 2017 is looking better already.
Yours in excitement for all the new year can bring,
